Two Kinds of Clarence Water

Mains on One Side of the Road, Wells on the Other

ECWA serves the denser parts of Clarence along Main Street, Transit Road, and the newer subdivisions, and spent over four million dollars on Clarence waterline replacement in 2025 alone. Beyond the mains, USGS mapped most Clarence wells into the Onondaga Limestone aquifer, a karst formation with sinkholes and solution channels. Limestone water is very hard, often carries sulfur, and is more exposed to what happens on the surface than a deep sand-and-gravel well would be.

Why Clarence Is Different

Karst Geology and a Growing Town

The Onondaga Limestone under Clarence is a cherty, fractured rock where groundwater moves through solution-widened bedding planes rather than filtering slowly through sand. USGS documented sinkholes, disappearing streams, and wells that went dry during a 1980s water level decline in the eastern part of the county. In plain terms, a Clarence well is drawing from rock that dissolves in water, which is where the hardness and the sulfur smell come from, and from a formation that connects quickly to surface conditions.

On the ECWA side, Clarence’s growth in Clarence Center, Harris Hill, and along Transit Road means a lot of newer homes on Niagara River supply with the same 1.62 ppm chlorine dose that Amherst sees. The town is also actively replacing mains, which brings its own run of discolored water and flushing.

What Clarence homeowners on wells and on ECWA mains ask most often.

If you get a water bill from the Erie County Water Authority, you are on the mains. If you do not, and you have a pressure tank and a well cap in the yard, you are on a well. Some Clarence roads have both within a few hundred feet, especially north of Clarence Center Road and east toward Newstead. We confirm before recommending anything, because the two situations need different equipment.

Because it comes from limestone. USGS mapped most Clarence wells into the Onondaga Limestone aquifer, and limestone is calcium carbonate, which is what hardness is. ECWA water is surface water from the Niagara River and does not pick up minerals the same way. A Clarence well can run several times harder than Buffalo’s 99 ppm, and a softener for it is sized to the tested number, not a city assumption.

That is hydrogen sulfide, which dissolves into groundwater from sulfur-bearing rock and from bacteria in the well. Limestone and the shale beneath it are common sources. At household levels it is unpleasant rather than a health concern, but it corrodes plumbing and fixtures over time. Oxidizing filtration or air injection removes it once we measure the level.

Chloride and sodium, in addition to the usual bacteria, nitrate, iron, manganese, and hardness. USGS specifically flagged road-salt contamination in shallow Clarence-area wells near the New York State Thruway. If chloride is elevated, reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is the practical fix for drinking water, since softening does not remove it.

Karst limestone moves water through open channels and fractures, and USGS documented sinkholes and disappearing streams in the Clarence and Newstead area. That means surface water can reach the aquifer quickly. Annual bacteria testing and UV disinfection are the standard safeguards, and cloudy water after a storm is a reason to retest.

It is far cheaper than retrofitting.
